Bicentennial 2017 – 200 Years of the mdw
In 2017, the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna celebrated 200 years of existence. This historic jubilee was observed not just on the mdw campus but also at all departments, in the public sphere, and at the Konzerthaus, the Musikverein, and the Akademietheater. Beneath the banner of mdw200, the mdw spent the year serving up a variety-packed programme, the climax of which was reached in mid-June: for over one week, the mdw presented highlights from its 24 departments on an almost daily basis. Moreover, the jubilee observances included scholarly examination of the mdw’s past in in the form of an “oral history”.
On this jubilee platform, you’ll find a visual review of 2017’s numerous highlights, an overview of the individual (scholarly) focuses, and an archive of all events. Furthermore, there’s a multimedia timeline that summarises the university’s path from the original, very basic singing school of 1817 to one of the world’s largest and most influential places of training in music, film, and the performing arts.
